I’m very pleased with the results and would recommend Dr. Losasso to anyone.
Let me start by saying that i’m a 37 year old trans woman that was firmly stuck in the closet due to fear, and disgust of my body. I wanted to do something about my chest since I was a child but was told by every doctor that it was cosmetic and insurance will not cover anything to have it fixed. All my life I was reluctant to take off my shirt in front of people because people would stare and make comments.
I Started my transition with hopes that I would gain enough money to pay for the procedure myself so I could finally feel comfortable in my own body. I finally saved enough money to get the Nuss Procedure done so I started looking for doctors who could do the procedure. I searched for and asked doctors for a while with no good results. Finally, one day I ran across Dr. Barry Losasso and read most of the reviews. All of them were great, nothing less than a 4.4 out of 5. So when I got over worrying about how I’ll be treated because I’m trans, I called his office. When I first called, they answered with ‘Pediatric Surgical Associates’ and I thought I had the wrong number. It wasn’t – while they are pediatric surgeons they do the Nuss Procedure on adults as well. I was able to talk to Georgia, who is awesome BTW, and she helped me with everything. She helped me with things like which doctors to see to get cleared for surgery and getting insurance to cover everything. She’s the best.
My first meeting with Dr. Losasso was great. I was nervous about meeting him because I didn’t know what to expect. He was the nicest guy, he entered the room with a smile and warm hand shake. Immediately I was put at ease. He thoroughly explained everything to me and answered every question I had. My first meeting with him he seemed a little dated with information regarding trans people, probably because of limited interactions with trans people but still full of respect. At my next appointment it seemed like he had taken the time to learn more about people like me and learned more about trans people. I didn’t even ask him to use female pronouns or anything but treated me like he would any other woman.
Almost all of the doctors that I saw were in the Valley Medical Group. I was also worried about judgement by those doctors about being trans. Turns out they are all accepting of LGBTQ+ people. I got treated with a lot of respect and support from all of the doctors and nurses at every office. Every one of them had nothing but great things to say about Dr. Losasso and how amazing of a surgeon he is. When I went to one of the other Valley sites for pain management and my final blood work, they even had a pride flag hanging outside, which made me very comfortable about entering the building. Everyone in the system used my preferred name and pronouns the entire time after i asked them too.
When I checked into Valley Hospital they already had everything on file, like preferred name and gender. They called me Monica without having to ask, were super nice and friendly. While waiting, all of the doctors who were going to be there for the surgery came and explained who they were and what they would be doing during the surgery. The last one to see me was Dr. Losasso and soon after they took me to surgery. I was calm all the way up to the moment of entering the OR. I started shaking and uncontrollably crying. All of the nurses in the room swarmed to me trying to calm me down. They told me not to worry that they would be giving me something to calm me down soon. I heard one nurse ask “Are you giving her something now?” and the next thing I’m waking up to a nurse waking me up after to make sure I was OK. I said, “Yeah, I feel like a finally got a good night sleep” then went back to sleep. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days and was released. While I was there in the ICU I had a nurse for 12 hours at a time that cared for me and only one other patient at a time. They were the nicest people and they were fun to be around. While I was there Dr. Losasso came and checked up on me everyday to make sure I was doing well. Dr. Amit Tibb, the pulmonologist I saw to get cleared for surgery, came and visited me to make sure I was doing well. My entire experience with Dr. Losasso and the Valley Medical System was very positive. I would rate all of them with 5 stars.
When I got home I was able to get a good look at the Doctor’s work. I’m very pleased with the results and would recommend Dr. Losasso to anyone. About 2 weeks after the surgery I went back to see him and he took off the bandages for the incisions. You can barely see the scars that were left behind. I’m very pleased with how everything turned out so far, and I still have some healing to do. I am very pleased with my body and I’m out to most people now. Dr. Losasso may not realize this, but he may have saved my life in more ways than one. I can’t wait to see how it looks after a year. If you have pectus excavatum please give his office a call. They are amazing people and would love to help you.
Sincerely,
Monica B.
