“Recently, our 19-year-old son had to have surgery for pectus excavatum, also known to some people as, “sunken chest.”
It is not a common problem that can be solved easily. The surgery involves putting a metal bar inside your chest lifting your rib cage to its correct position and sometimes having to place a bar for purposes of taking the pressure off the heart, which was our son’s case.
Without it being done the pressure impacts breathing abilities, cardiac symptoms, pain and various other pulmonary issues as well as leading to other complications down the road.
We searched on the internet for weeks trying to find the right doctor that had experience in this type of surgery. We also looked into the hospital that specialized in this type of surgery in Virginia only to find out that our insurance would not pay out of state. After that we called doctors in New York City that also specialized in this surgery that had offices in New Jersey. Once we started asking how many of these surgeries they had done per year, the answers were surprising. Most of them said six to eight per year or approximately one every other month. That was just too scary for us to put our son’s life in the hands of someone who has done this so little. They would have taken our insurances, but it was not worth the risk of saving money to affecting his life during surgery and after.
After realizing these doctors were not what we needed, we started to research further and continued calling various specialists. Finally, we found Dr. Barry LoSasso of Paramus.
He was not part of our insurance, but we wanted to see what he had to say. We had our consultation, which lasted one to two hours. It turned out to be the most detailed and informative, giving us the time and understanding of the procedure of what had to be done. He never rushed us and was unbelievably thorough and answered all our questions in complete details, even taking the time to illustrate on our son’s chest to show exactly where the incisions would have to be made and what he would do to correct the problem. He had performed around 1,000 of these procedures and had a wide range of age in patients who he had already helped. This was an absolute convincing moment for our decision to have Dr. LoSasso perform our son’s surgery. His office staff was also extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the entire process and was willing to work with us.
He works with Valley Hospital of Ridgewood. Another decision that was perfect. The hospital team was great from start to finish. After the surgery, the care at the pediatric wing was also incredible. Everyone we met at the hospital was polite, informative, answered our questions without rushing us. They took excellent care of our son.
Deciding who does this surgery should not be taken lightly. Besides having this surgery done correctly there is much pain in this operation and knowing how to manage pain is just as important as the surgery. That is why experience counts.
We all have heard of terrible stories in the news, including hospitals and doctors screwing up. We are so glad we found him and his team. He was worth every dollar we had to spend. Please do your research if choosing to get this done.”
